The character is a parody of catalog and retail entrepreneur John Peterman, founder of The J. Peterman Company.
He is the eccentric owner of the J. Peterman catalog sales company and is also Elaine Benes’s boss during her employment there. According to O’Hurley, Peterman’s manner of speaking is inspired by “’40s radio drama, combined with a bit of a bad Charles Kuralt.” She meets him in “The Understudy”, the last episode of season six.
Although the real J. Peterman company and its founder John Peterman are based in Lexington, Kentucky, notNew York City, the show accurately depicts the catalog’s extravagant prose describing the hard-to-find clothing and accessories it sells. In 2001, O’Hurley became a major investor in the company, and sits on its board.
The character appeared in approximately 22 episodes from Season 6 onward.
